An initial assessment of  the wetlands around Lake Titicaca was conducted  to discover the impact on  the fresh water source for the village of Puno.   Heavy metal contamination and chemicals discharged from mining activity is prevalent in the area.  The team also assessed about 15 abandoned petroleum wells and discovered  a lot of residual waste. There are likely hundreds of abandoned wells affecting multiple districts in northwestern Puno.
