SUMMARY:Lead Poisoning as a Global Environmental Justice and Human Rights Issue.
DESCRIPTION:Lead (Pb) poisoning remains one of the most widespread yet under-recognized environmental health crises globally\, disproportionately affecting children and marginalized communities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) (Chen et al\, 2025). Despite being entirely preventable\, Pb exposure continues through contaminated consumer products\, informal recycling of lead-acid batteries\, polluted soils\, industrial emissions\, unsafe housing\, and legacy contamination from historical practices. \nFrom an environmental justice perspective\, Pb poisoning exemplifies systemic inequities: populations least responsible for pollution often bear the heaviest burden of exposure and harm. Informal workers\, low-income households\, women\, and children are routinely exposed to Pb in environments where regulatory protections are weak\, enforcement is limited\, or economic necessity overrides health safeguards (Howarth & Eiser\, 2024). From a human rights standpoint\, Pb exposure violates fundamental rights\, including the right to health\, the right to a safe and clean environment\, the rights of the child\, and the right to development (Centre for International Environmental Law\, 2015). \nInternational human rights frameworks recognize states’ obligations to prevent environmental harm that undermines human dignity and wellbeing. Yet Pb poisoning persists largely due to governance gaps\, regulatory failures\, and insufficient political prioritization (World Health Organization\, 2024). SUMMARY:Lead Exposure and Preeclampsia
DESCRIPTION:Lead Exposure and Preeclampsia. \nResearch indicates a relationship between elevated blood lead levels (BLLs) and the incidence of preeclampsia\, a hypertensive disorder during pregnancy. In Sub-Saharan Africa\, including Ghana\, women of childbearing age often exhibit BLLs exceeding recommended safety thresholds. A systematic review reported a weighted mean BLL of 26.24 µg/dL among pregnant women in the region\, substantially higher than the CDC’s recommended limit of 3.5 µg/dL (Bede-Ojimadu et al.\, 2018).  \nIn Ghana\, environmental factors such as informal lead-acid battery recycling\, use of lead-containing cosmetics\, and contaminated cookware contribute to lead exposure. In Ghana\, over 1.7 million children are estimated to have blood lead levels exceeding 5 micrograms per deciliter – the level above which there is cause for concern according to UNICEF estimates. A national survey revealed that 53.5% of children surveyed in 3 ecological areas of Ghana have BLLs above 5 µg/dL\, indicating widespread environmental contamination. This is yet to be published by Ghana Health Service. Given that lead can cross the placental barrier\, pregnant women are at risk of transferring lead to the fetus\, potentially leading to adverse outcomes like preeclampsia.​ \nThe correlation between high BLLs and preeclampsia underscores the need for public health interventions in Ghana. SUMMARY:Toxic Exposures and Women’s Health: Emerging Research and Global Solutions
DESCRIPTION:In honor of International Women’s Day 2025\, Pure Earth hosted a virtual webinar on the critical issue of pollution’s impact on women’s health. Expert panelists included: \n\nJaclyn Bowen\, Executive Director of The Clean Label Project\nDr. Alejandra Cantoral\, Professor at Universidad Iberoamericana\nDr. Laura Geer\, Associate Professor at the SUNY Downstate\, School of Public Health\n\nDr. Alejandra Cantoral presented on common lead exposure sources in Mexico\, covering dietary sources of exposure in addition to other sources. In a sample of the most commonly consumed foods in Mexico\, lead was present in 18% of tested food items. Dr. Cantoral also covered the lead exposure risks that affect women most\, with sources like the use of lead-glazed ceramics being linked to higher blood lead levels in Mexican women. She also discussed the new California regulation requiring baby food manufacturers to test a sample of their products for heavy metals. Her research found that higher fish consumption from pregnant mothers was associated with higher cord blood and fetal mercury levels. She also covered her latest work alongside Pure Earth\, developing the LERIC model\, which allows for the evaluation of the costs associated with lead impacts from IQ decrement. DESCRIPTION:From the UNICEF-Pure Earth report “The Toxic Truth” we know that at least 800 million children globally have blood lead levels at or above 5 µg/dL\, nearly all of them in lower and middle income countries.  We know lead is bad for kids — but it is also bad for communities and economies. \n\nGrowing research indicates that lead poisoning has significant negative impacts on health\, child development and economic growth in lower and middle income countries\, with profound implications for international development programs globally.\n\n\n\n\n\nTwo distinguished experts will share their groundbreaking research on how lead poisoning affects people and economies: \n\nBjorn Larsen is an International Development and Environment Economist and World Bank Consultant. His research focuses on environmental health issues including air pollution and lead and arsenic exposure.\nAna Navas-Acien\, MD\, PhD is a Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Her research investigates the health effects of environmental exposures\, molecular pathways and gene-environment interactions\, and effective interventions for reducing involuntary exposures and their health effects. She trained in Medicine at the University of Granada\, Spain\, and completed her residency training in Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the Hospital La Paz\, Madrid and her PhD in Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University\, Baltimore\, MD. She directs the Columbia University Northern Plains Superfund Research Program\, a center that integrates science\, technology\, and traditional knowledge to protect the Northern Plains water resources and Indigenous communities from hazardous metal exposures.
