SUMMARY:Skoll World Forum Side Event: Improving the Health and Futures of Over 500 Million Children
DESCRIPTION:Fresh off the TED live stage as a 2025 Audacious Project finalist\, Pure Earth President Drew McCartor will share a bold\, global strategy to protect half a billion children from an invisible environmental health crisis\, one that steals over 2 million IQ points from the next generation every day\, lead poisoning. More than 90% of affected children live in low- and middle-income countries. Lead poisoning also contributes to an estimated 3.5 million deaths annually from cardiovascular disease—more than natural disasters\, active wars\, road accidents\, HIV\, and malaria combined. \nLearn about the major sources of lead exposure from common consumer products to industrial practices and efforts currently underway to solve this global public health crisis. Top experts will present real-world case studies highlighting both challenges and proven\, scalable solutions. 3X Grammy Award winner\, Pure Earth Leadership Council member and UN Goodwill Ambassador Ricky Kej will guide the conversation and engage the audience throughout. \nFeatured speakers and experts include:\nDrew McCartor (Pure Earth)\, Tanvi Monga (TED)\, Dr. Lucia Coulter (Lead Exposure Elimination Project)\, Lee Crawfurd (Center for Global Development)\, Dr. Chris Kinally (Pure Earth)\, Tom Hird (Coefficient Giving)\, Dr. Mary-Ann Etiebet (Vital Strategies)\, Tammy Tan (Lead Research for Action) and Will Fitzgibbon (The Examination). \nFollowing the session\, guests are invited to bring a household item (i.e.\, traditional ceramic or aluminum cookware\, kohl eyeliner\, turmeric) for on-site lead testing using a portable analyzer and to engage directly with experts. \nWho this is for\nThis session is designed for funders and philanthropists interested in high-impact\, scalable global health solutions\, as well as practitioners\, researchers\, and policymakers working in public and environmental health. It is also well-suited for anyone interested in tackling large-scale\, often overlooked global challenges. \nWhat you’ll get out of it\n– A clear understanding of global lead poisoning\, its scale and impact; the sources of lead exposure; the solutions\n– Real-world insights from cutting-edge research and interventions across multiple countries\n– Concrete ideas for how to engage\, invest\, or collaborate in solutions at scale \nLearn More

SUMMARY:Lead Poisoning as a Global Environmental Justice and Human Rights Issue.
DESCRIPTION:Lead (Pb) poisoning remains one of the most widespread yet under-recognized environmental health crises globally\, disproportionately affecting children and marginalized communities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) (Chen et al\, 2025). Despite being entirely preventable\, Pb exposure continues through contaminated consumer products\, informal recycling of lead-acid batteries\, polluted soils\, industrial emissions\, unsafe housing\, and legacy contamination from historical practices. \nFrom an environmental justice perspective\, Pb poisoning exemplifies systemic inequities: populations least responsible for pollution often bear the heaviest burden of exposure and harm. Informal workers\, low-income households\, women\, and children are routinely exposed to Pb in environments where regulatory protections are weak\, enforcement is limited\, or economic necessity overrides health safeguards (Howarth & Eiser\, 2024). From a human rights standpoint\, Pb exposure violates fundamental rights\, including the right to health\, the right to a safe and clean environment\, the rights of the child\, and the right to development (Centre for International Environmental Law\, 2015). \nInternational human rights frameworks recognize states’ obligations to prevent environmental harm that undermines human dignity and wellbeing. Yet Pb poisoning persists largely due to governance gaps\, regulatory failures\, and insufficient political prioritization (World Health Organization\, 2024). This webinar seeks to elevate Pb poisoning from a purely technical or health issue to a global justice and rights-based concern\, fostering cross-sector dialogue and mobilizing coordinated action at national and international levels. \n\nAn estimated one in three children globally is exposed to unsafe levels of lead\, with the highest burden in LMICs.\nLead exposure contributes to irreversible neurological damage\, reduced IQ\, behavioural disorders\, poor educational outcomes\, and long-term economic losses.\nCommunities affected by lead poisoning often lack access to healthcare\, legal remedies\, clean environments\, and political representation.\nExisting interventions are fragmented\, underfunded\, and insufficiently anchored in rights-based and equity-focused approaches.\n\nWithout urgent\, coordinated action grounded in environmental justice and human rights\, lead poisoning will continue to perpetuate intergenerational poverty\, inequality\, and preventable disease. \nSpeakers.  \n\nEsmond Wisdom Quansah\, DD.- Regional Program Director\, Africa\, Pure Earth\nDr. Marian Selorm Sapah- Senior Lecturer\, University of Ghana & Resource Mobilization Co-Lead and Office Manager- Center for Geoscience Studies (CfGS)\nDr. Oluwatosin Kuti- Founder\, Afya Lafia Innovation\nMr. Hobson Agyapong- Principal Programme Officer\, Ghana Environmental Protection Authority.\n\nModerator \nProf. Yvonne Sena Akosua Loh- Department of Earth Science\, University of Ghana. \nTheme: Ending Lead Poisoning Through Environmental Justice: A Global Call to Protect Health and Human Rights. \nWebinar registration  link \n  \nEnquires: Sikapa: nana@pureearth.org/ Laurencia: laurencia.bonsu@unlv.edu

SUMMARY:Lead Exposure and Preeclampsia
DESCRIPTION:Lead Exposure and Preeclampsia. \nResearch indicates a relationship between elevated blood lead levels (BLLs) and the incidence of preeclampsia\, a hypertensive disorder during pregnancy. In Sub-Saharan Africa\, including Ghana\, women of childbearing age often exhibit BLLs exceeding recommended safety thresholds. A systematic review reported a weighted mean BLL of 26.24 µg/dL among pregnant women in the region\, substantially higher than the CDC’s recommended limit of 3.5 µg/dL (Bede-Ojimadu et al.\, 2018).  \nIn Ghana\, environmental factors such as informal lead-acid battery recycling\, use of lead-containing cosmetics\, and contaminated cookware contribute to lead exposure. In Ghana\, over 1.7 million children are estimated to have blood lead levels exceeding 5 micrograms per deciliter – the level above which there is cause for concern according to UNICEF estimates. A national survey revealed that 53.5% of children surveyed in 3 ecological areas of Ghana have BLLs above 5 µg/dL\, indicating widespread environmental contamination. This is yet to be published by Ghana Health Service. Given that lead can cross the placental barrier\, pregnant women are at risk of transferring lead to the fetus\, potentially leading to adverse outcomes like preeclampsia. \nThe correlation between high BLLs and preeclampsia underscores the need for public health interventions in Ghana. Strategies may include community education\, regulation of lead-containing products\, and improved prenatal care to monitor and manage lead exposure among pregnant women. \nSpeakers:  \n\nErika Marquez\, Ph.D\, MPH- Assistant Professor\, School of Public Health\, University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, and Director of the Nevada Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program \nIan Ogurek\, D.O.\, MPH- Internal Medicine Resident\, PGY-2\, Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV.\nAnita Asamoah\, Ph.D- Senior Research Scientist\, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission\nCaesar Nyadedzor MSc- Toxicologist & Head of Poison Control Unit\, Ghana Health Service\nEsmond Quansah\, DD- Country Director\, Pure Earth Ghana\n\nModerator and Opening Remarks \nNana Agyei Sikapa Ofosu-Manu\, Communications Officer\, Pure Earth Ghana \nDate/Time \n\nJune 9\, 2025\, \n1400 hrs GMT/7 am PST \nZoom: https://unlv.zoom.us/meeting/register/YgPEDrsEQYefvzOqNWtRTQ#/registration\n\nPartners/Organization \n\nPure Earth\nUniversity of Nevada\, Las Vegas School of Public Health. \nNevada Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program\nGhana Health Service\n\n
