SUMMARY:Lead Exposure and Preeclampsia
DESCRIPTION:Lead Exposure and Preeclampsia. \nResearch indicates a relationship between elevated blood lead levels (BLLs) and the incidence of preeclampsia\, a hypertensive disorder during pregnancy. In Sub-Saharan Africa\, including Ghana\, women of childbearing age often exhibit BLLs exceeding recommended safety thresholds. A systematic review reported a weighted mean BLL of 26.24 µg/dL among pregnant women in the region\, substantially higher than the CDC’s recommended limit of 3.5 µg/dL (Bede-Ojimadu et al.\, 2018).  \nIn Ghana\, environmental factors such as informal lead-acid battery recycling\, use of lead-containing cosmetics\, and contaminated cookware contribute to lead exposure. In Ghana\, over 1.7 million children are estimated to have blood lead levels exceeding 5 micrograms per deciliter – the level above which there is cause for concern according to UNICEF estimates. A national survey revealed that 53.5% of children surveyed in 3 ecological areas of Ghana have BLLs above 5 µg/dL\, indicating widespread environmental contamination. This is yet to be published by Ghana Health Service. Given that lead can cross the placental barrier\, pregnant women are at risk of transferring lead to the fetus\, potentially leading to adverse outcomes like preeclampsia. \nThe correlation between high BLLs and preeclampsia underscores the need for public health interventions in Ghana. Strategies may include community education\, regulation of lead-containing products\, and improved prenatal care to monitor and manage lead exposure among pregnant women. \nSpeakers:  \n\nErika Marquez\, Ph.D\, MPH- Assistant Professor\, School of Public Health\, University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, and Director of the Nevada Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program \nIan Ogurek\, D.O.\, MPH- Internal Medicine Resident\, PGY-2\, Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV.\nAnita Asamoah\, Ph.D- Senior Research Scientist\, Ghana Atomic Energy Commission\nCaesar Nyadedzor MSc- Toxicologist & Head of Poison Control Unit\, Ghana Health Service\nEsmond Quansah\, DD- Country Director\, Pure Earth Ghana\n\nModerator and Opening Remarks \nNana Agyei Sikapa Ofosu-Manu\, Communications Officer\, Pure Earth Ghana \nDate/Time \n\nJune 9\, 2025\, \n1400 hrs GMT/7 am PST \nZoom: https://unlv.zoom.us/meeting/register/YgPEDrsEQYefvzOqNWtRTQ#/registration\n\nPartners/Organization \n\nPure Earth\nUniversity of Nevada\, Las Vegas School of Public Health. \nNevada Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program\nGhana Health Service\n\n

SUMMARY:Toxic Exposures and Women’s Health: Emerging Research and Global Solutions
DESCRIPTION:In honor of International Women’s Day 2025\, Pure Earth hosted a virtual webinar on the critical issue of pollution’s impact on women’s health. Expert panelists included: \n\nJaclyn Bowen\, Executive Director of The Clean Label Project\nDr. Alejandra Cantoral\, Professor at Universidad Iberoamericana\nDr. Laura Geer\, Associate Professor at the SUNY Downstate\, School of Public Health\n\nDr. Alejandra Cantoral presented on common lead exposure sources in Mexico\, covering dietary sources of exposure in addition to other sources. In a sample of the most commonly consumed foods in Mexico\, lead was present in 18% of tested food items. Dr. Cantoral also covered the lead exposure risks that affect women most\, with sources like the use of lead-glazed ceramics being linked to higher blood lead levels in Mexican women. Watch Alejandra Cantoral’s presentation here. \n \nJaclyn Bowen presented her work with the Clean Label Project\, testing for contaminants in consumer products and revealing surprising new research findings on heavy metal contamination in prenatal vitamins. She also discussed the new California regulation requiring baby food manufacturers to test a sample of their products for heavy metals. Watch Jaclyn Bowen’s presentation here.  \nDr. Laura Geer presented research on the impacts of mercury exposure on prenatal development. Her research found that higher fish consumption from pregnant mothers was associated with higher cord blood and fetal mercury levels. She also covered her latest work alongside Pure Earth\, developing the LERIC model\, which allows for the evaluation of the costs associated with lead impacts from IQ decrement. Watch Laura Geer’s presentation here. \n \nIn a panelist Q&A\, speakers touched on the need for further research on the impacts of lead and heavy metal pollution on women’s health and addressed key audience questions. Watch the Panelist Q&A here.

SUMMARY:Lead-Free Future for Every Child Webinar Series: How to conduct an environmental lead exposure risk assessment
DESCRIPTION:The Partnership for a Lead-Free Future invites you to join this webinar\, designed to provide practical guidance on conducting environmental risk assessments. In this context\, a risk assessment focuses on identifying and evaluating lead exposure risks in children’s environments.\n\nThis session will explore key considerations for performing lead exposure risk assessments in resource-constrained settings. It will highlight real-world case studies\, including Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)’s work in Nigeria and Pure Earth’s initiatives in the Philippines. These examples are intended to complement existing resources\, such as the Assessing Environmental Lead Exposure in Resource-Constrained Settings report.\n\nThis webinar is part of the Lead-Free Future for Every Child series and marks the third installment. Be sure to revisit earlier sessions: the first webinar\, which explores sources of childhood lead exposure\, and the second\, which delves into conducting blood lead level surveys.\n\nSpeakers:\nZeineldin Elmikaty\, a member of the IFMSA Public Health international team and a 5th-year medical student from Egypt\nLarah Ortega-Ibañez\, Pure Earth’s Country Director for the Philippines\nCasey Bartrem\, USAID\nBret Ericson\, Environmental Health\, UNICEF (moderator)\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Webinar: Powerful Research on the Scale and Impact of Lead Poisoning Globally
DESCRIPTION:From the UNICEF-Pure Earth report “The Toxic Truth” we know that at least 800 million children globally have blood lead levels at or above 5 µg/dL\, nearly all of them in lower and middle income countries.  We know lead is bad for kids — but it is also bad for communities and economies. \n\nGrowing research indicates that lead poisoning has significant negative impacts on health\, child development and economic growth in lower and middle income countries\, with profound implications for international development programs globally.\n\n\n\n\n\nTwo distinguished experts will share their groundbreaking research on how lead poisoning affects people and economies: \n\nBjorn Larsen is an International Development and Environment Economist and World Bank Consultant. His research focuses on environmental health issues including air pollution and lead and arsenic exposure.\nAna Navas-Acien\, MD\, PhD is a Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Her research investigates the health effects of environmental exposures\, molecular pathways and gene-environment interactions\, and effective interventions for reducing involuntary exposures and their health effects. She trained in Medicine at the University of Granada\, Spain\, and completed her residency training in Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the Hospital La Paz\, Madrid and her PhD in Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University\, Baltimore\, MD. She directs the Columbia University Northern Plains Superfund Research Program\, a center that integrates science\, technology\, and traditional knowledge to protect the Northern Plains water resources and Indigenous communities from hazardous metal exposures. Among other advisory committees and roles\, she serves as a member of the National Cancer Advisory Board.\n\n\n\nWatch the Recording
