National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2026 Event at Mount Sinai Hospital

National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is an annual observance to raise awareness and reduce childhood lead exposure.

The Region 2 Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU), the New York State Children’s Environmental Health Centers Network (NYSCHECK) Coordinating Center, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital Center on Health and Environmental Across the Lifespan (HEALS), and the award-winning podcast LEAD: How this Story Ends is Up to Us are excited to host a series of panel discussion on childhood lead poisoning on October 27th, 2026 at Mount Sinai Hospital as we continue to make progress against childhood lead poisoning.
 
This event will feature stories of impacted families highlighting how lead continues to be a problem in global and local communities, while highlighting important education, research, and community initiatives to combat childhood lead poisoning. The goal of this event is identify solutions and spark conversations between academic, community, and other stakeholders on how to implement them. 

The 10 AM panel will focus on lead testing, including current childhood blood lead level screening guidelines and also testing of home indoor/outdoor environments with a Q&A discussion. Following a lunch (provided) from 11 AN to noon, a smaller policy focused discussion will bring together stakeholders to discuss how we can better prevent lead poisoning through safe housing and other local government policies from noon to 1 PM.
