Coalition Against Lead Pollution

The project addresses lead pollution in the Greater Accra Region, specifically in Kpone and Afienya, home to formal and informal ULAB recycling activities. Many toxic sites in these communities have not been officially documented and pose risks to the population, especially children and pregnant women. Studies conducted by Pure Earth and Ghana Health Service have generated evidence of widespread lead exposure among children. Lead pollution from informal and industrial sources was reflected in elevated BLLs in children living nearby (including extreme levels >45 µg/dL), and elevated concentrations in soil and dust from nearby homes.

This intervention will build capacities to promote awareness and public education on lead pollution, enhancing participation within these two communities, empowering them to combat lead pollution and improve environmental health.
