Identification of Lead Poisoning Sources in Gujarat, India

This project is supported and funded by Global Jewellery Pvt. Ltd. Under the sanctioned project, we will conduct Rapid Marketplace Screenings (RMS) in 6 districts from the proposed Gujarat state to identify lead-containing products and prioritize sources for future interventions. We will collect information on the scope and spread of sources of lead exposure in the target state by conducting RMS. This is a cost-effective method to determine sources of lead that are widely distributed.

Toxic site investigators will collect products from several regions of Gujarat. The data from the above activities will be analyzed by PE technical experts and the local partners resulting in a report that will guide the next steps in terms of blood lead level testing and household source screening.

Process Summary:
● Initial desk review for likely sources.
● Investigators are identified and trained for RMS.
● Development of a simple online system to which investigators will upload all data from marketplace screenings.
● Materials purchased, taken back to the office and screened by XRF & certified labs
● Data uploaded, including photos of all samples, sources
● Analysis conducted; short summary of findings
