Ongoing Projects:

Pure Earth México works in collaboration with government institutions, universities, the private sector, and local communities to reduce exposure to lead and improve the health and well-being of families and communities throughout the country. Our initiatives bring together scientific research, public policy, and community engagement to identify, understand, and address the sources of lead exposure. According to ENSANUT 2023, approximately 1.38 million children between the ages of 1 and 4 in Mexico — representing 17.2% of this age group — show elevated levels of lead exposure, highlighting the urgency of coordinated action. In Mexico, the main source of lead poisoning is the lead-based glaze traditionally used in artisanal pottery. Pure Earth México has developed high-impact national programs to eliminate the use of lead glazes and promote safe, lead-free alternatives that preserve cultural tradition while protecting health. At the same time, we continue to research and address other potential sources of exposure to ensure comprehensive solutions. Together, we are identifying lead in consumer products, assessing and remediating contaminated sites, and conducting health screenings in vulnerable populations, working toward healthier and safer communities for all.
