Pure Earth Mexico and UN Women join forces to digitally empower women potters in Mexico

CREA: An innovative platform transforming tradition into opportunity

Pure Earth Mexico is proud to announce that it has been selected as one of the winning organizations of the Second Call of the UN Women Regional Fund 2024 for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Thanks to this grant, Pure Earth Mexico will implement the project Digitizing Pottery: The CREA Digital Platform (Specialized Resource Center for Potters)”, an initiative that seeks to transform traditional knowledge into a tool for economic and social empowerment for women potters across the country.

Through this strategic partnership with UN Women, Pure Earth Mexico will develop an accessible and practical digital platform designed specifically for pottery communities. The platform will integrate the methodology of the successful “Women Made of Clay Circle” project, along with educational content focused on lead-free pottery production.

The goal is clear: to bring this knowledge to more people, digitally and with greater impact.

Objectives and Expected Results:

  • Develop and strengthen the CREA platform, providing digital content for technical and organizational training.

  • Digitize the methodology of the Women Made of Clay Circle project, facilitating its implementation in different communities.

  • Promote the digital empowerment of women artisans and improve their access to technological tools.

  • Expand the reach of Pure Earth Mexico, strengthening its ability to serve vulnerable communities.

  • Produce short, informative, and accessible audiovisual materials.

  • Implement a pilot program to test the use of CREA within a pottery community.

  • Train the organization’s operational team to ensure the platform’s proper use and long-term sustainability.

This project not only strengthens the institutional capacities of Pure Earth Mexico, but also directly supports the recognition of the economic, social, cultural, and collective rights of women potters, while promoting economic autonomy, community leadership, and environmental justice.

With CREA, women artisans not only preserve their cultural heritage — they are emerging as leaders of change within their communities.

Through this initiative, both institutions also advance the sustainable development agenda, implementing strategies aligned with:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

  • SDG 5: Gender Equality

  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities

  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

  • SDG 13: Climate Action

We thank UN Women for the trust placed in Pure Earth Mexico to lead this effort. Together, we are building a future where women potters in Mexico have access to new opportunities, improved living conditions, and an active role in the sustainable development of their communities—through the production of lead-free pottery.
