Position Overview:

The Vice President (VP) of Communications is responsible for Pure Earth’s global brand and will own the tone, voice, and visual identity of the organization while shaping the external and internal narrative and stakeholder engagement strategy. This role is a senior leader within the organization, sits on the Leadership Team, comprised of department heads and the Pure Earth C-suite.

The VP of Communications will develop and lead a world-class communications function, working from HQ in New York and guiding a seasoned global team operating across Latin America, Africa, and Asia. This role will ensure that the team works together to evolve, promote, and protect Pure Earth’s brand reputation. Further, the VP of Communications will serve as an ambassador for the brand, representing Pure Earth in relationships with all stakeholders across the varied communications ecosystem. The role requires extensive experience and mastery in brand building, storytelling, and stakeholder identification and engagement. Demonstrated expertise in inter-cultural fluency, operating across time zones and in a multi-lingual environment, and facility with topics, issues, and actors within international development are essential for success in this role.

The VP of Communications reports to the Chief External Relations Officer and oversees the entire Pure Earth Communications Department, with direct supervision of the Assistant Director, Global Communications, the Assistant Director, Strategic Program and Policy Communications, and the Senior Advisor, Global Communications. The VP of Communications is also responsible for close coordination with the VP of Programs on oversight of country-office communications.

Vision, Strategy, and Leadership

• Build and deploy a cohesive global brand framework, with consideration for the nuanced needs of different key audience groups across the many markets in which we operate
• Execute an audience-centric integrated strategic communications plan to advance Pure Earth’s brand identity and increase the visibility of our programs and priorities across key stakeholder audiences
• Support and elevate Pure Earth’s leaders (inclusive of this role) to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences
• Proactively identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization, and ensure the organization is appropriately prepared for any crises that may emerge

Day-to-Day Operations

• Oversee development of all Pure Earth global communications materials including but not limited to the annual report, Pure Earth’s website and new media, newsletter, blog posts, etc.
• Cultivate relationships with key journalists and serve as lead point person on media relations
• Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including external consultants and / or agencies and seamless integration across the organization

Team and Talent

• Lead a talented global team in the development and execution of global, regional, and local communications strategies
• Identify needs and opportunities, and mentor, train, and / or recruit and develop new talent to achieve success
• Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality
• Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives and establish priorities

Success in the First 12 Months

• Develop and disseminate Pure Earth’s evolved brand and leadership positioning, ensuring that priority audiences are defined and engaged using high-quality digital and social content.
• Effectively scale global communications operations, maintaining consistency and quality of external messaging.
• Advance Pure Earth’s approach for communicating programmatic vision and impact with internal and external stakeholders

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

University degree in Communications, International Development, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

Experience

• 15+ years of progressive professional experience in a communications role, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership position in a nonprofit, agency, or brand setting
• Proven experience designing and executing global communications strategies in partnership with teams in multiple markets, preferably including low- and middle-income countries
• Excellent background in cultivating strong media relationships
• Extensive experience working for a global non-profit or international NGO, with a sophisticated understanding of cross-cultural communication challenges and technical needs
• Deep experience working with data and analytics, with demonstrable expertise in leveraging data to achieve communications results
• Fluency across communications channels (social, digital), platforms (events, conferences), and AI-based tools
• Strong leadership and team management skills, with a track record of mentoring and scaling communications talent

Salary

NY HQ (Tier A): This is a full-time exempt position with a compensation range of $175,000 -$225,000 (L5). Position Summary 

Pure Earth seeks an experienced Director/, Legal, Compliance & Risk, ideally an attorney, to manage legal, compliance, and risk management functions for the organization. This role reports to the Vice President, Operations, and will work closely with the C-Suite and Department and Country leadership, as well as the Board and the Audit & Risk Committee to ensure the organization maintains full legal compliance across all of its entities, effectively manages organizational risks, and protects its intellectual property and organizational interests. This individual will coordinate and collaborate with team members across the organization, focusing on providing strategic legal guidance, and ensuring compliance and operational excellence. The role balances strategic advisory with operational execution, supporting both framework development and day-to-day legal and compliance needs.

Key Responsibilities 

Compliance & Legal Governance 

• Responsible for full life cycle of legal entity management, from set up of legal operations in new countries through scheduled wind down or closing inactive entities. 

• Ensure Pure Earth maintains full compliance with all legal obligations, bylaws, and regulatory requirements across all of its entities (HQ and overseas) 

• Conduct comprehensive compliance assessments to identify gaps and areas of concern

Risk Assessment & Management 

• Conduct risk assessments to identify potential legal, compliance, and operational risks

Required Qualifications

Work Environment & Expectations

Full-time. Hybrid work model. Employees are expected to work in the NYC office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the option of working remotely on other weekdays. Pay Transparency 

This role is classified as an L5 position. The salary for this position ranges from $97,000 – $170,000. Additional compensation may be considered for highly qualified candidates. IEC/SBCC Communications  

• Lead the design and implementation of SBCC strategies for Pure Earth India’s state-level programmes, ensuring communication interventions are evidence-based, audience-centred and behaviour-focused  

• Conduct or support audience analysis, barrier identification and message development for each programmatic context — including communities, consumers, traders, frontline workers and government officials  

• Develop communication-content for programmatic interventions  — pamphlets, posters, short videos, and other field-facing collateral.

• Field-sourced storytelling: At least three-four blogs/articles or case studies, which can be used on Pure Earth’s website, for donor reports, and external sharing.  

• Editorial calendar and channels: Developing and publishing programme-focused social media and newsletter editions on schedule.  

• Vendor and budget management: Briefing, tracking, contract management, and invoicing for external vendors, without missed timelines.  

• First point of contact for programme teams: State programme teams are routing content requests and updates to the Manager directly.

Required Qualifications and Experiences: 

Education 

• Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Development Studies, Public Health, Social Work, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience. 

Experience 

• 6–10 years of experience in communications, preferably within the development sector; prior exposure to public health or environmental health programs is preferred.  

• Demonstrated experience designing and implementing SBCC campaigns for community-level behaviour change — from audience analysis and message development through to material production and rollout  

• Experience developing IEC materials in Hindi and English for diverse audiences including communities, frontline workers and government officials

Position Overview:

Pure Earth is seeking an experienced Technical Director to support Pure Earth’s project and country teams across Africa, which at a minimum will include Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Malawi, Tanzania, and South Africa, with a special focus on providing toxic site remediation support and oversight.

The Technical Director will provide scientific rigor, analytical judgment, and quality assurance across Pure Earth’s Africa programmatic portfolio. The role is responsible for ensuring that the best-available science, appropriate technical/health and safety protocols, and global and national standards are utilized in identifying lead exposure sources, follow up biomonitoring studies, and contaminated site investigation and risk-mitigation/remediation work.

The Technical Director role requires the ability to apply scientific and analytical rigor to the prevention of lead exposure—while translating that rigor into practical, implementable programmatic approaches in various African countries. This includes experience working on heavy metal exposure issues—particularly lead—strong analytical judgment in prioritization and design; and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and credibly to program teams, government counterparts, donors, and community stakeholders.

This is a field-embedded role that requires regular engagement in on-ground program activities, site visits, data management, hands-on problem solving, and quality assurance and control alongside program teams and partners. The role demands comfort working in complex field settings and applying environmental health and safety judgment in real-world conditions—not only desk-based analysis.

Scope of Work:

Technical Support & Quality Assurance

• Work with Pure Earth’s Technical Support and Research Department to provide technical support across Pure Earth’s programs in Africa focused on lead exposure source identification, risk assessment, source intervention, risk-mitigation, and site remediation. Technical support for site remediation will be a priority component of the role.
• Contribute to, adapt, and maintain technical standards, SOPs, protocols, data analysis and decision frameworks for programmatic activities in conjunction with Pure Earth Technical Support and Research Department, and consistent with global best practices and applicable regulatory contexts.
• Review and sign off on technical approaches for program design, pilots, and scale-up initiatives.
• Ensure consistent application of quality assurance and control, health and safety protocols, and ethical standards across states and projects.
• Support Country Directors to spearhead country level strategic plans by providing technical support.

Programmatic Technical Support

• Support the implementation of initial, preliminary, and detailed site screenings and remediation activities in the country.
• Provide field support related to source identification, exposure assessment, and risk mitigation across market, community, and home assessments.

• Support Technical Managers and program teams in translating scientific evidence into operationally sound program designs.
• Guide prioritization of sources and interventions based on risk, feasibility, and impact.
• Provide inputs to country-level strategies, workplans, and implementation approaches.
• Work closely with monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) team to ensure indicators, data collection methods, and interpretations are methodologically appropriate.

Protocols, Tools & Capacity Building

• Adapt, develop, and institutionalize training materials related to lead exposure assessment, mitigation, and remediation, with materials on remediation considered highest priority.
• Build and strengthen the technical capacity of Technical Managers, Program Managers, field teams and government counterparts through in-person and online trainings, mentoring, and on-the-job support.
• Contribute effectively to data management and analysis, supporting informed decision-making and high-quality project outcomes.
• Support the procurement and safe and effective use of technical equipment (e.g., XRFs, GPS, Lead Care II devices) and related QA/QC and documentation standards.

Research, Evidence & Knowledge Integration

• Provide guidance to country teams on field investigations, exposure assessments, and applied research activities.
• Review technical components of concept notes, proposals, and donor reports.
• Support synthesis of evidence and lessons learned to inform policy engagement and scale-up.
• Contribute to publications, guidance documents, protocols, and learning products as required.

Coordination & Representation

• Coordinate closely with the Pure Earth Technical Support and Research Department to ensure alignment with Pure Earth protocols and guidance documents while adapting for country-specific needs.
• Engage with government departments, technical institutions, laboratories, and expert bodies as a technical representative of Pure Earth Africa.

Support donor and stakeholder discussions, as required.

Required Qualifications and Experiences:

Education

• Master’s degree in a relevant technical field such as environmental health, environmental engineering, public health, toxicology, chemistry, or related disciplines. (PhD preferred but not required.)

Experience

Required

• 6–12 years of experience in environmental health, pollution control, or public health programs, preferably in low- and middle-income country contexts.
• Experience leading or managing toxic or contaminated site remediation or clean up required.
• Demonstrated experience applying scientific evidence and analytical judgment to real-world program design and implementation.
• Demonstrated experience working in field-based or implementation-heavy roles, with comfort operating in diverse, resource-constrained, or complex on-ground environments.
• Ability to translate complex environmental health concepts into clear, actionable guidance for program teams, government counterparts, donors, and non-technical audiences.
• Experience working across multidisciplinary teams and translating technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrates strong skills in data management and data analysis.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
• Professional fluency in English; working knowledge of French or other African languages is an advantage.
• Ability and willingness to travel internationally (up to 40%), as needed.

Work Environment:

It is preferred that the Technical Director work in a Pure Earth office or project country in Africa (Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Malawi, Tanzania, or South Africa), but remote work in another African country will be considered. The Technical Director is expected to work in an African time zone. Travel to project countries (Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Malawi, Tanzania, and South Africa) is expected 40% of the year.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

Pure Earth is exploring opportunities to work in Nepal to reduce lead poisoning and pollution and improve health outcomes in populations at risk of lead exposure. In partnership with the national government, local authorities, and communities, potential efforts in Nepal would focus on conducting assessments to identify sources of lead, leading and supporting risk mitigation efforts, remediating high-risk contaminated sites, raising awareness regarding lead exposure and its detrimental effects, as well as building government capacity for lead surveillance, testing, and long-term risk mitigation.

JOB DESCRIPTION / RESPONSIBILITIES:

The role will report to the India Country Director and will support information gathering, stakeholder engagement and relationship building, as well as operational and project scoping for a potential Pure Earth lead poisoning prevention and mitigation initiative in Nepal.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

(A)Stakeholder Management:

(1) Identifying key stakeholders in government, civil society, academia, and the private sector working on programs or research related to public and environmental health, specifically lead poisoning.

(2) Cultivating and building strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, and local/national/regional organizations working in environmental health, as well as facilitating introductions between key stakeholders and Pure Earth.

(B)Preliminary Desk Review:

(1) Conduct a preliminary desk review describing the “lead landscape” in Nepal, including the knowledge and gaps of lead’s public health burden and sources of exposure; the country’s institutional capacity to process and test human and environmental samples to detect lead poisoning and contamination; and the existence of relevant strategies, policies, and other normative guidance.

(C) Operational Report

(1) Researching and reporting on requirements for Pure Earth to operate and hire staff in Nepal, identifying options for legal support in-country, assisting with initial staff recruitments, and scoping potential working / co-working spaces for Pure Earth staff.

(D) Monthly Progress Reports

(1) Working closely with the India Country Director, the Pure Earth technical team, and partners to begin to prepare and develop a high-quality project work plan appropriate for the local context, aligned to government and donor priorities, and in line with Pure Earth’s overall vision and mission.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES:

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Public Health, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

Essential:

(1) Minimum five to seven years of experience in managing environmental and/or public health programmes, particularly in lead (Pb) or other heavy metal poisoning prevention and mitigation.
(2) Strong understanding of Nepal-specific regulatory frameworks related to environmental health, pollution control, and toxic pollutant management.

Preferred:

(1) Experience in leading and managing mid-to-large operational and/or research projects; experience working in field sites and with communities will be preferred.

(2) Experience in developing evidence-based solutions to complex environmental health challenges.

(3) Prior experience working with an international NGO or in a large-scale, multi-state programme environment.

Skills and Competencies

(1) Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with experience in team building, stakeholder management, and capacity building.

(2) Professional fluency in English.

(3) Ability and willingness to travel nationally, as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned programme and public health professional with demonstrated experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder environmental health and/or public health programmes, preferably in areas related to lead exposure, toxic pollutants, or heavy metal poisoning prevention and mitigation.

DURATION OF CONTRACT: This is a six-month contractual assignment. Contingent upon local project approval and availability of funding, the Program Management Consultant may have the opportunity to transition into a longer-term role as Program Manager with Pure Earth in Nepal/
