Pure Earth Peru meets with Public Prosecutor’s Office officials to strengthen efforts against lead exposure

In a joint effort to protect public health and prevent lead exposure, Pure Earth Peru held a strategic meeting with representatives of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, as part of the preparatory actions for the signing of an agreement aimed at strengthening capacities, knowledge, and tools for oversight and regulation in addressing this issue.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Alfonso Barrenechea, National Coordinator of Specialized Prosecutors’ Offices for Crime Prevention; Cynthia García, Manager of the Office of Projects and Technical Cooperation of the Public Prosecutor’s Office; and Ricardo Bacigalupo, Cooperation Specialist of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Representing Pure Earth Peru, our Country Director, Rodrigo Velarde, participated and shared the organization’s technical experience in addressing lead exposure, as well as the actions currently being implemented to protect the health of the Peruvian population.

During the meeting, participants discussed joint strategies to address lead exposure and strengthen comprehensive prevention and health protection actions. The importance of coordinated work was highlighted to enable prosecutors’ offices to more effectively carry out their oversight and regulatory functions, incorporating specialized tools and knowledge.

Technology demonstration and lead measurement

As part of the activities, our Lead Projects Coordinator, Carlos Cabrel, organized a practical demonstration on the use of portable XRF equipment and the LeadCare II blood lead analyzer system, with the support of our specialized suppliers.

XRF equipment enables the rapid measurement of lead levels in soils and solid materials, providing instant results that facilitate the identification of risk areas. Meanwhile, the LeadCare II analyzes blood lead concentration within minutes, delivering reliable information for decision-making. The combination of these technologies will allow inspectors to respond more quickly and accurately to potential exposure situations, strengthening the effectiveness of their interventions and the protection of communities.

As part of the agreement to be signed, the donation of this equipment to the Public Prosecutor’s Office is planned, thereby consolidating key technological support for its oversight and regulatory functions.

Towards a strategic and sustainable agreement

The meeting marked a key step prior to the signing of the agreement between Pure Earth Peru and the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Its main objectives include strengthening technical capacities in lead management through training; providing advanced and rapid measurement tools; and consolidating a cooperation model that integrates prevention, oversight, and public health protection.

This initiative reinforces Pure Earth Peru’s commitment to generating sustainable solutions to lead contamination, ensuring that the actions undertaken are not only technical, but also strategic and replicable, protecting the most affected populations and promoting safer and healthier environments for all.
