Workers at the concession received specialized training in nursery management, organic fertilization, and biochar production to support the long-term success of reforestation efforts implemented as part of mine closure activities.
As part of the technical assistance that Pure Earth Peru provides to mining concessions committed to responsible, mercury-free mining, the project team visited the Saltur VI concession, located in the district of Inambari, Madre de Dios, to strengthen the capacities of workers responsible for nursery management and the maintenance of reforested areas.
The training was led by Sofía López, Project Assistant for Pure Earth Peru in Madre de Dios, together with Oscar Huacarpuma, Biochar Specialist, and Richard Huamán, Nursery and Organic Fertilizer Specialist.
Training to Support the Growth of Reforested Areas
During the visit, the specialists delivered hands-on training on nursery management, the production and application of organic fertilizers, and the use of biochar, a soil amendment that helps restore soil quality in areas degraded by mining activities.
The team also shared practical recommendations on the care and maintenance of the forest species already planted, with the goal of increasing their survival rates and supporting the gradual restoration of previously mined areas.
These activities are part of the ongoing technical assistance that Pure Earth Peru provides to miners participating in the project, helping them strengthen their knowledge and independently implement responsible mining practices.
Restoration Continues Beyond Tree Planting
The training was carried out as part of the follow-up to the reforestation activities implemented several months earlier on one hectare of the Saltur VI concession, where 1,800 plants of different species were planted through the Sustainable Livelihoods and Restored Environments project, funded by Brilliant Earth and implemented by Pure Earth Peru.
This hectare is one of 15 pilot hectares established by Pure Earth Peru in Madre de Dios. These pilot sites enable mining concessions to gain practical experience in reforestation, nursery management, soil restoration, and long-term maintenance of planted species, with the objective of enabling them to independently implement these practices as part of their mine closure processes in the future.
Through this ongoing technical assistance, Pure Earth Peru continues to promote responsible mining models that contribute to ecosystem restoration, the reduction of mercury use, and the strengthening of local capacities in Madre de Dios.
